My Kidnapper

★★★★

(2010)

Mark Henderson’s short and sharp documentary begins where most stories about kidnapping end; After Henderson and 7 others were taken from the Sierra Nevada and held captive in the Colombian Mountains for 2 months until they were released physically unscathed…

2 years later, put in the unique situation in which of his kidnappers has sent him a “hey how are you doing?” email out of the blue, Henderson is presented with an opportunity to find out more about his abduction. It's this hook that gives My Kidnapper enough punch after the fact to make it a fascinating watch indeed.

In a search for answers, Henderson and 3 others head back to Columbia to meet one of their captors and find out if their imprisonment held any purpose for the locals in living in the grip of a civil war. A taught, lean and impressive film with an undeniable punch.
